Alexis Lee ch 15

Chapter 15 talks about branding through websites. This is just creating a website for your company to connect with the consumer. The website must attract the consumer with its color, character, emotion, consistency, and the overall layout. A well organised and easy to use website will satisfy the consumer consciously and subconsciously.

Things becoming viral is a great tool for marketing since it is a free way to get a lot of exposure. Options include posting a commercial, a product, using a celebrity YouTuber and sponsoring them, or placing an ad in front of a video.

Etsy
I saw that someone else wrote about Pinterest, which lead me to think of Etsy. Etsy is essentially the amazon of homemade and vintage items. In fact, according to this article, people get angry when they think that the items might not have been made by hand. In 2014, they made over 1.93 billion dollars in merchandise sales. Personally, I have bought a custom engraved-buckle dog collar for Milo (he always loses tags), and several personalized items for my room as well as jewelry since I first discovered Etsy. A lot of the sellers rely on Pinterest and other social media platforms to get them noticed. For example, the woman I bought my dog's collar from gave me 20% off my next purchase when I showed that I made a post about it on Instagram. Sellers can also pay to have their stores "promoted" on Etsy, but that requires people to know about Etsy in the first place. But I came across them when I was searching for a very specific item that I could customize, so Google definitely recognizes that they exist.

Podcasts
Podcasts are just audio files that are distributed through the internet and can be downloaded onto devices. I think it's really interesting how people aren't listening to radio very much anymore, but there is a resurgence of podcasts, which are similar.

The article I found talked about why people are so obsessed with podcasts at the moment. It talks about how podcasts are taking blogs place in the order of popularity. The article states how radio became too cluttered with commercials, demographic narrowing, and political mumbo jumbo. The author believes podcasts are taking the medium back to it's creative roots. Podcasts use storytelling to excite and enthuse it's audiences instead of trying to reach a certain demographic.

Here is a list of the 50 best podcasts of 2016 according to the atlantic.

Pop Ups/Pop-Unders

When you access the Internet, you no doubt have seen a window or a creature of some sort appear on your screen in an attempt to get your attention. These advertisements known as pop ups, and they often appear when you access certain sites. Pop-ups are usually larger than banner ads but smaller than a full screen. Pop-unders are ads that appear underneath the webpage and become visible only when the user leaves the site. For example, if you have ever visited a travel website, you probably were hit with a pop-under ad for Orbitz, one of the heaviest users of this form of web advertising.

The Big Four of Social Media

The book says that the big four of social media are Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Youtube. All very common names (except Google+) and are often a topic of daily conversation (except Google+).

Facebook has become extremely important to marketers, as has Twitter, with having their personal accounts and with ads adorning the edges of pages.

Google+? See link below.

Youtube is definitely a hotspot for advertisers. With ads on videos and posting their commercials its one of the best places for them to advertise (in my opinion).

 Sponsorships

Chapter 15 talks about advertisements on the internet and one of the forms it mentions is sponsorships.
There are two types:
-Regular sponsorships are when a company pays to sponsor a section of the site.
- Content sponsorships are more involved agreements, in which the sponsor not only pays for name association but participates in the content itself.

Blogs
One of the main ideas in chapter 15 is the use of blogs, and how an advertiser can use them to their advantage to reach target markets. Blogs have the potential to reach a wide target market and that's what marketers want. Bloggers can also be big influencers on a product and that's what marketers need to watch out for. They need to keep bloggers happy, because if they don't that could have a negative impact on the company.
The article I choose provides examples of successful business blogs.

Behavioral Targeting

This is when advertisers target consumer needs by looking at their search history and then having ads pop up that suit their interest. This works better than the traditional target markets using demographics. Some think that this is scary and invasion of privacy but they have assured that your privacy is kept safe and that no date is personally identifiable. The article says 4 ways that behavioral targeting is changing the web. It was obviously written by someone who favors it. It also states that millennials are not as worried about privacy and they like this targeting.

Attracting and Retaining Readers

The amount of people who read newspapers have declined. Newspapers have tried putting in more graphics and colors to attract more readers. Then in an attempt to enforce the importance of newspapers, they have launched an ad campaign of "Smart is the new sexy". They want to remind the general public that getting their news through a good source is better than getting it on social media.

The magazine industry sales are declining as we all know, probably because of the continuous evolution of technology and the fact that a lot of people don't like to read anymore. Magazine sales dropped by 20-something million. Even though they have dropped so much they still sell, probably because of the creative advertisements and the die-hard, old school supporters. That is why they target their specific target markets, and that is why magazines are even still around. Sales have dropped a lot, but not enough to cause magazines to be considered completely "out of style."

One of the main ideas that I feel is important to know is campaign tracking. When you track a campaign you want to know how well your campaign is doing. A method that the book suggested was having people call a day after the ad campaign, and tell them what they thought. When adverters get that feedback they can make adjustments if needed.
The article that I choose goes into more depth of how you can track marketing efforts.

According to the Association of Magazine Media, the average magazine contains 45% advertisements and 55% editorial material.  The effectiveness of a print ad depends on the strength of the message impact. Magazines have the advantage in this area because of the glossy full color spreads.  Another factor is audience interest, usually readers have a strong interest in what the magazine is about. If you advertise a product loosely tied to the topic you are more likely to get a response.

In 2004, digital media was not even an option and ten years later it is starting to take over with how the society is developing. People like the quick access and also the now more popular events which help bring in a lot of companies most revenue.

Attracting and Retaining Readers

The percentage of Americans who say they regularly read a daily newspaper has declined from 54 percent in 2004 to 38 percent in 2012. With its online competition, readers have a lower attention span. In response, newspapers have been redesigned to keep up with the changes. The goal is to be easier and faster to read. They started using more color and graphics and shortening the articles, or giving a summary of them for short skimming. It was found that more women are reading newspapers than men so they are including more things that women would be interested in.

This link gives examples of newspapers that have been successful in this time period. They utilized online resources, put effort into detail and design, and found niches to tend to.

I  think that the world of magazines is an interesting topic because some would argue that print is dead, but others would argue that it is fully alive and thriving since it is such an overly saturated market. Creative flexibility

Chapter 12 focused on magazines. Most hard copy magazines are aesthetically pleasing and are very well designed, especially the larger copies, but even those are limiting compared to digital magazines like the Fader. Magazines have more capabilities when it comes to advertisements when it comes to size and pages, but online magazines are interactive and make the user more likely to click for more information.

Types of Newspaper Advertising

There are three types of newspaper advertisements: display advertising, classified advertising, and special ads and inserts.

Display advertising is found throughout a newspaper and has two sub-categories: local and national/general. Local advertising is by local businesses or retailers while national advertising is by national brands.

Classified advertising is one of a newspaper's significant sources of revenue. Classified ads are categorized under subheads like employment, real estate, and automotive.

Special ads can be government and financial reports and other financial or business notices. Special ads can also be political, promoting a candidate, issue, or cause. Inserts aren't actually in the newspaper but are included with the newspaper at delivery. Inserts are commonly catalogs or brochures.

Here are some instances of poorly constructed classified ads.

The Future of Newspaper

Newspaper remain an important advertising medium, but revenue has significantly declined over the past few years. Newspaper generate most of their advertising revenue from local advertisers, and retailers. News papers account for less than 5 percent on regional and local marketers or their advertising revenue. Newspapers not only have problems of reproduction and quality and rate differentials they also have to battle other types of media. Newspapers are getting outsourced by the Internet. Fewer people are purchasing newspapers and are relaying on media as a primary source.

The Disadvantages of Magazine Advertising

This article discusses the negative aspects of magazine advertisement. This includes the limited reach, long lead times, clutter, and cost.

Labels:

Magazine Advertisements

Choosing where to place your ad in a magazine is crucial to the visibility of it. In the book, it said the first cover (outside front), second cover (inside front), third cover (inside back), and fourth cover (outside back) were the desired spots for advertisements. The article I found talked about where to position your print ads in order to gain maximum exposure. It talked about which side of the page is best and the proximity to the margins is also important. I think it's interesting how we just look at an advertisement as an advertisement, but when it was being developed it was using science and statistics to determine the best way to gain viewers.

Advantages of Magazines: Permanence

Something we always tell potential advertisers for Stephens Life Magazine is that our magazine has a shelf life of at least ten years. Print advertising just lays around forever, waiting for someone else to pick it up and look at it. I thought this Facebook post was relevant; it said, "...why wouldn’t you want your work/project in print first? It then becomes a tactile object that potentially hangs around forever."

Labels:

Mackenzie_Chp. 12

Advantages of Magazines: Services

A final advantage of magazines is the special services some publications offer advertisers. Some magazines have merchandising staffs that call on trade intermediaries like retailers to let them know a product is being advertised in their publication and to encourage them to display or promote the item. Another service offered by magazines (usually the larger ones) is research studies that they conduct on consumers. These may include consumer trends, changing purchase patterns, and media usage or may be relevant to a specific product.

Labels:

Advantages of Magazines: Selectivity

Selectivity is the ability to reach a specific target audience. Magazines are the most selective of all media except direct mail. Most magazines are published for a specific group of people or community. The book mentions a few examples such as Rolling Stone, PC Magazine, and Ebony. These are magazines that have a specific audience. They create they're content to please them and have loyal readers and consumers.

Clutter and Competition

The more successful a magazine becomes, the more advertising pages it attracts, and this leads to greater clutter. This clutter can make it difficult for an advertiser to gain readers' attention and draw them into the ad. Therefore, many print ads use strong visual images, catchy headlines, or some creative techniques to grab the interest of magazine readers.

Consumer Receptivity and Engagement

Magazines are interesting because consumers who read them are more receptive to advertisements in magazines than in any other medium. Advertisements are shown to be a valuable part of the magazine themselves. Consumers find them enjoyable and acceptable, which does not often happen in other mediums such as television and radio.

I have found an article that explains the benefits of magazine advertising.

Creativity Flexibility

https://design.tutsplus.com/articles/20-magazine-templates-with-creative-print-layout-designs--cms-26455

A huge advantage of magazines are that they give advertisers a great deal of flexibility in terms of the type, size, and placement of advertising material. Some magazines will offer at extra charge a variety of special options that can enhance the creative appeal of the ad and increase attention and readership.   Examples of this include gatefold, bleed pages, inserts, and creative space buys. Gatefolds are when there is a third page that folds out of the magazine.  Bleed pages are those that the color/picture extends off of the page. Insert examples would be pop-ups, scented ads, and stickers. This article says that print is in no way dead. It is very much alive and then it shows examples of templates that people can use to make a creative magazine layout.

Long Lead Time

A drawback of magazines is the long lead time needed to place an ad. Most major publications have 30-60 day lead time, which means space must be purchased and the ad must be prepared well in advance of the actual publication date. No changes in the art or copy of the ad can be made after the closing date. Long lead time means that magazine ads can't be as timely as other media, such as radio or newspapers, in responding to current events or changing market conditions. Some magazines are shortening the lead times required due to decline in ad pages and advertising revenue. The link I provided provides more information about long and short lead times.
