Chapter 21 discusses how advertising encourages materialism. I find this to be true throughout all age groups and income levels, just on different levels. A car advertisement would appeal materialistically to an adult whereas a toy or video game advertisement would appeal to a child. This tactic is effective, but it has adverse societal effects.

The article below is an overview of the negative effects on families caused by the materialism that advertising encourages.

Readability Tests

A readability test is to determine the efficiency of the copy in a print ad without reader interviews. The Flesch formula determines readability of a copy by using the average number of syllables per 100 words.

These tests are effective, but they have limitations such as: the copy becoming too mechanical and not having direct input from receiver.

The link below is a website that offers insight on the Flesch formula and how to use it in a readability test.

Creative flexibility

Chapter 12 focused on magazines. Most hard copy magazines are aesthetically pleasing and are very well designed, especially the larger copies, but even those are limiting compared to digital magazines like the Fader. Magazines have more capabilities when it comes to advertisements when it comes to size and pages, but online magazines are interactive and make the user more likely to click for more information.

This is a link regarding the differences in magazine types

After reading about the limitations of television, I decided to look up the demographics of Today's television watchers. Most of them were from older generations and watched mostly day time TV. I found this topic to be the most relevant because I don't know many people in my generation who still watch live television. Most of us are subscribed to streaming sites and if we do watch regular TV, it's on demand and commercials are skipped. Below is an article about why people are choosing not to watch live television thus, missing out on commercials and advertisements.

This article is about 17 ways to get your content the most coverage in he most efficient way. I chose to post about media coverage because of the section in chapter 10 about media characteristics and which outlets receive the most attention.

Chapter nine discussed using emotion to appeal to their target audiences. This tactic is very effective when trying to sway customers from a competing company. The link I chose is for a Pearle Vision commercial that took an emotional approach in order to emphasize that they are a company that cares even when they don't necessarily have a reason to.

Chapter 6 talked about the harm of celebrity endorsements so I started thinking about cases in which these endorsements end up negatively effecting companies. I found an article that features failed celebrity endorsements and how this impacted sales.

I picked this commercial, because I thought it was kind of interesting, and at the time also got a lot of criticism, because of how the woman had her baby.

This Best Buy ad was the only one I remembered from the 2011 superbowl. It encourages keeping your phone up to date by alluding obsolete phones to Ozzy Osbourne who is "out of date" and replacing him with Justin Bieber who is "current".

While reading through the chapter, I chose to go over the section that focuses on non-personal channels such as print and broadcast media. Print media refers to paper publications circulated in the form of physical editions of books, magazines, journals and newsletters while broadcast media is comprised of both radio and television.

Both channels are effective when it comes to advertising, but broadcast media is more aggressive in approach and almost guaranteed to reach more people since younger generations aren't as appreciative of print media.

One company that has been very successful in broadcast media for a long time is Old Spice. From super bowl commercials to sponsoring youtube videos, Old Spice has been successful advertising via television and social media. This link is to a website that features 11 social media marketing lessons from the Old Spice campaign.
